Environments at Work was chosen to work with Carbonite, a leader in cloud-based based backup systems, for its global headquarters relocation from the Back Bay to Downtown Crossing, a neighborhood many consider the new technology hub.  The project consisted of 385 workstations, 15 private offices, 12 conference rooms, and other areas including a café, training room, and unique living rooms for each department.

The project team helped the client facilitate not only a location shift, but also a shift in culture.  The move provided a unique opportunity to create a new space to support Carbonite’s energetic culture, brand, and act as a tool for recruitment and retention of talent. Carbonite’s name, originally from a Star Wars reference, became a key driver of the design concept. The project team worked seamlessly together to create an integrated space where brand, wellness, environment, technology and business drivers merged.

The space was designed to create department neighborhoods while preserving an open concept.  Collaboration spaces – from small focus rooms and conference rooms to more informal living rooms and multi-purpose spaces – inhabit each neighborhood offering employees a variety of work settings.  In addition, there are centrally located common areas – a coffee bar and café – positioned to support informal collaboration.

Open communication, collaboration and understanding the project goals and client culture were key to creating a successful, unique space.

EAW was genuinely interested in understanding, communicating, and fulfilling the vision for our new ‘home’. The honesty, product knowledge and desire to roll up their sleeves and work with us were all qualities that were supremely helpful in aiding our decision making throughout the entire process.
